Summer Colors Dwarf Mix Delphinium

The smallest delphinium we have seen, only a foot tall, but still covered with big, dramatic blooms. The color range includes a mixture of blues, purples, and white. This is the first dwarf white available. An early variety so all plants should flower in the first year and for years thereafter.

PLANTING

Delphinium grandiflorum

Perennial, Zones 3-9

Germination: 10-21 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 60-70ºF

Seed Planting Depth: Sow on the surface, lightly cover. Cold treating seeds aids in the germination

Starting Indoors: Start indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost. Cold treat the seed by sowing into moist soil or paper towel, wrap in a clear plastic bag, and place in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks. Provide 60-70ºF soil temperatures until germination. Transplant 12-18” apart after the last frost.

Sowing Outdoors:  Direct sow outdoors in spring or fall.

Soil Needs: Fertile, well-drained 

Approximate days to flower from seed: Blooms late in the first season when started early indoors, midsummer thereafter

Uses: Cut flower, perennial beds, containers and planters, attracts beneficial insects, butterflies and hummingbirds

Care: Amend the soil with compost before transplanting or sowing. Plant in areas with good air circulation, do not overcrowd. Apply a liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks or use a time-release fertilizer at planting time.
