Jackson Wonder Lima Bean (65-70 Days)

Jackson Wonder Lima Bean is a dependable heirloom that thrives in both southern and northern gardens. Introduced in the late 1800s by Atlanta farmer Thomas Jackson, whose objective was to develop a high-yielding, simple-to-harvest lima bean that didn't need support. The result was this prolific bush lima with unusually lovely maroon-speckled seeds. Pods hold 3-5 seeds that can be used for young shell beans or harvested for firm textured dried beans.

Germination: 4-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 75-85ºF

Seed Sowing Depth: 1” deep 

Outside Sowing: After the last frost with soil temperatures above 70-75ºF. Sow 2-3” apart. Planting in soil under 70ºF results in poor germination.

Harvest: When beans are plump and fill out the pods

Tips: Lima beans need to grow in higher temperatures than bush beans. Cool summer temperatures result in low yields. Grow in light, well-drained soil, and provide adequate, even moisture, especially at flowering time. Dry soil can result in low yields and fibrous pods. Do not over-fertilize the Jackson Wonder Lima Bean with nitrogen, which results in a surplus of foliage and low, delayed pod growth.
